Boston Dynamics, not just humanoids

　現在、最も運動性能の高いヒューマノイドロボットを開発しているのは、文句なしにBoston Dynamicsだ。同社は2021年6月に、ソフトバンクグループから韓国Hyundai Motor Groupに経営支配権が移った。なおソフトバンクグループもまだ同社の2割の株式を保有している。　Boston Dynamicsは論文も滅多に出さないし、プレスリリースも出さない。時折YouTubeで動画を公開するのみである。だが新たに公開した動画は世界中の人の度胆を抜くことで、その企業価値を上げてきた。今年新たに公開された動画では2体のヒューマノイド「Atlas」がパルクールを行っている。重さ75kg程度とされるAtlasがドシドシと傾斜を走り、片腕でハードルを乗り越え、2連続でバク宙を決める姿は素晴らしい運動能力で、（成功例だけ見ると）普通の人の運動能力を超えつつあるなと感じさせられるに十分だ。一番初めの障害である斜めに配置された板を使った連続ジャンプは、日本のテレビ番組『SASUKE』の最初の障害を彷彿とさせる。　今回、Boston Dynamicsは、ロボット開発の裏側を紹介する短い動画も同時に公開した。失敗と修理、ハードウェアとソフトウェアの改良を、何度も何度も高速で繰り返しながら開発している様子が示されている。作動油を噴き出しながら倒れたり、ジャンプに失敗して思い切りボディを激突させる様子はインパクトがある。こちらの動画後半では、日本人のロボットエンジニアである神崎秀氏がテロップ付きで紹介されている点も合わせて注目したい。　なお、Boston Dynamicsのロボットのうち、商用化されているものとしては4足歩行ロボットの「Spot」は広く知られているが、同社は物流ロボットもすでにビジネスにしている。2019年に買収した、ディープラーニングと3D画像認識技術を持つKinema Systemsの技術を使ったもので、用途は物流ではおなじみのピック＆プレイスである。国内でも一部企業が採用していると聞いており、個人的にはこちらにも注目している。　Boston Dynamicsでは「Stretch」というデパレタイズやパレタイズ用のロボットも開発していることを公開している。「Hadle」というダチョウのようなロボットのより実用的な後継機で、移動できる腕付き、「モバイルマニピュレータ」と呼ばれるタイプのロボットだ。ヒューマノイド「Atlas」で世間の人目とお金、そしてもちろん優秀な技術者たちを集めつつ、おそらくこれが今後の彼らの稼ぎ頭になるのだろう。これらのロボットには共通技術が活用されている。見た目だけにとらわれると可能性を見誤る。【次ページ】「Tesla Bot」への期待と懸念
