　Renesa Electronic China (hereinafter referred to as Renesa) completed the acquisition of Dialog Semiconductor in the UK in August 2021 and the acquisition of Celeno Communications in Israel in December of the same year. Through these acquisitions, Renesas's industrial business will be further strengthened. We asked Sailesh Chittipeddi, CEO and General Manager of IoT Infrastructure Business headquarters (IIBU) at Renesas, about the synergies brought about by the acquisition and the strategy of the business headquarters.

What about IIBU in 2021, including performance, etc.?

Mr. Sailesh Chittipeddi has had a very good year on the whole. Affected by COVID-19, driven by markets such as home appliances and notebook computers, as well as infrastructure-related transition to "Windows11" and the formal popularity of 5G (fifth generation mobile communications), are the main reasons for driving IIBU business.

　The "RA family" of microcomputers based on the core of Arm "Cortex-M" is also beginning to be a general trend. Until a few years ago, Renesas lagged behind in Arm-based microcomputers, but it could be said to have caught up. In addition, RISC-V-based solutions will be introduced in 2021. Another solution will be released in 2022. At the same time, gateway-oriented MPU based on 64-bit RISC-V is also under development.

　By publishing such a wide range of products, it will be possible to expand its share for one year not only in the MCU/MPU area, but also in the analog / power area. Especially in the field of analog / power, Dialog is expected to play a major role after 2022.

　On the other hand, the state in which demand substantially exceeds supply continues. This will continue in 2022.

While completing the acquisition of Dialog, a number of "Weining combinations" were announced. We've seen synergy.

In the future, Mr. Chittipeddi, one of the areas where Dialog will play a major role in Renesas will be in the low power sector. Dialog is low power, and the old Intersil has excellent technology at medium power, enabling Renesas to offer high-value combinations in the power range from low power to 100V. As complementary product portfolios are grouped together, the range of target markets will be further expanded.

　In addition, the programmable device "GreenPAK" created by Dialog will use Renesas's sales channels to expand into the industrial equipment market. In Dialog, which is strong in the mobile market, the sales of industrial equipment market is relatively weak. In the future, Renesas, which has an advantage in the industrial machinery market, can cover this.

　In November 2021, he released a small-scale FPGA "ForgeFPGA" using the assets of Dialog programmable devices. Generally speaking, FPGA is expensive, while ForgeFPGA is a low-cost product that controls logic units below 5000, which makes it an excellent advantage in IoT applications. In the long run, GreenPAK and ForgeFPGA will bring great differentiation to Renesas in the field of IoT.
